1 charged, 1 killed in wrong-way crash on US-77 near Newkirk

KAY CO., OK – One person died, and five people sustained injuries earlier this month in a wrong-way collision along the highway in northeast Kay County, reports Kay News Cow.
The two-vehicle crash occurred on Thursday, July 3rd, along US-77 near East Gate Road, which is just north of Newkirk and south of the Oklahoma and Kansas state line.
Police say that a southbound 2015 Ford Explorer entered the northbound side of the highway and collided head-on with a northbound 2017 Ford Edge.
The front-seat passenger from the Explorer, identified as 42-year-old Dawnetta Jean Buell, died at the scene of the accident.
Medics transported both drivers, one adult passenger from the Explorer, a 10-month old baby from the Explorer, and a 13-year-old passenger from the Edge to area hospitals with injuries of unknown severity.
Officials say that the baby from the Explorer was not properly restrained.
The driver of the Explorer, identified as 36-year-old Robert Dwayne Mahoney, was arrested on multiple charges, including first degree manslaughter and child neglect.
