WOODARD COUNTY, OK – One person died, and two others were injured as a result of a pursuit-turned-crash that happened in Woodward County on Sunday.
According to OKCFOX, the incident began when a 19-year-old man, later identified as Noel Almandarez, hit a pedestrian with his vehicle.
Almandrez fled the scene of the pedestrian crash prior to first responders’ arrival.
Upon arrival, EMS crews rushed the pedestrian to a hospital, who is now in stable condition.
A Harper County deputy later spotted Almandrez in the area of Highway 412 and Western Avenue in Woodard. The deputy tried to pull him over, and Almandrez refused, which prompted a pursuit.
The chase continued in Woodward County, and that deputy required back-up from the Woodward County Sheriff’s Office and Police Department.
Police continued to follow Almandez, who attempted to crash into a Woodard police cruiser, which led to a shootout between officers and Almandez. Moments later, Almandez crashed head-on into a semi-truck.
Almandez died from his injuries at the scene, and the truck driver sustained minor injuries.
Medics attended to the truck driver, who was then released.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has started an investigation and will provide a report to the Woodward County District Attorney’s Office.
