NORTHWEST OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Two people lost their lives, and two others were injured in a crash caused by a street racer in Northwest Oklahoma City last month.

Police told News9 the crash happened on the eastbound lanes of Northwest 39th Street near Portland Avenue. The street racer, identified as 32-year-old Felix Santiesteban, was racing another street racer when he crashed into the back of an SUV occupied by a family.

The SUV overturned and ejected two people: a 12-year-old boy and his grandmother, aged 62. The boy’s mother and his sibling, a 10-year-old girl, were injured.

EMS crews transported four injured individuals to a hospital. There, the boy and the grandmother died from their injuries.

The boy’s mother and sister survived. According to the woman’s husband and the girl’s father, Ismael Mares, the woman is recovering from a traumatic head injury, while the girl remains in the intensive care unit.

Santiesteban was found on the ground beside his vehicle and was also taken to a hospital. He has since been released from the hospital and booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center.

Santiesteban was charged with second-degree murder, reckless driving, three counts of DUI, and driving without a valid driver’s license.

Santiesteban also had to have his car impounded for 90 days, was penalized for street racing, and fined $2,000 by the police.

Eyewitnesses noted that street racing is popular on Northwest 39th Street and is often frequented by crowds. Since last year, police have been cracking down on all spectators and racers, and the city passed an ordinance with the hope of reducing the number of deadly collisions.
