OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — A 29-year-old man was critically injured Wednesday night when his vehicle was hit by a train in north Oklahoma City’s College Park area, reports KFOR.
The accident occurred on West Hefner Road, just east of North Lee Avenue, at about 7:05 p.m.
According to the Oklahoma City Police Department, the man drove through the signal arms at a railway crossing just as a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train was approaching southbound.
Witnesses said it appeared the man was trying to drive over the tracks before the train neared, but was unable to travel fast enough, resulting in a crash.
Oklahoma City Fire crews worked to extricate the victim from the wreckage of his vehicle. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition with major head trauma.
The impacted crossing was shut down for an extended period during the response and investigation.
