OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — One person died early Friday after an Oklahoma Highway Patrol chase led to a crash at an Oklahoma City business, reports KOCO.
The fatal wreck occurred at Perry Publishing and Broadcasting, at the corner of Northeast 23rd Street and Prospect Avenue, in the Martin Luther King neighborhood.
According to authorities, the pursuit was initiated at about 1:45 a.m. after troopers attempted a traffic stop on a pickup truck near Interstate 35 and Northeast 23rd Street. Two suspects in the vehicle sped away from the troopers, but the pickup later slammed into the building as the driver attempted to turn the corner at a high rate of speed.
The driver of the fleeing vehicle, Waymon Swanegan, was pronounced deceased on the scene, confirmed the OHP.
First responders pulled the passenger from the wrecked vehicle and rushed the patient to a local hospital in “poor” condition.
It remains unclear why the two suspects fled troopers. Authorities noted the suspects did not have warrants, but unspecified drugs were recovered from the vehicle.
An investigation by the OHP remains underway.
