WEATHERFORD, OK – Approximately 1,000 people were evacuated from their homes, and over 30 people were sent to a hospital after a big rig crash that led to an ammonia spill.
KOCO said the crash occurred around 10 p.m. in the Holiday Inn Express parking lot off the intersection of East Main Street and Cypress Drive. The force of the collision caused the truck’s gasket to leak and approximately 25,000 pounds of ammonia to spill, permeating the air.
The emergency management team issued a shelter-in-place order for residences within a 1.5-mile radius of the crash site. Newsweek confirmed that around 1,000 people were evacuated from their homes, which included three senior living facilities and a hotel. Five hundred people also evacuated to the Pioneer Event Center at Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
The shelter-in-place order has been lifted. KOCO said 36 people were sent to the hospital, and among the individuals, five were airlifted to OKC hospitals and 11 were left in critical condition.
Officials said 14 police officers were exposed to the ammonia and five of them suffered “chemical burns to their airways.”
Southwestern Oklahoma State University and Weatherford Public Schools cancelled in-person classes on Thursday per advice from emergency management officials. Food services and the bookstore at the university stayed open on Thursday.
The shelter-in-place order has also since been lifted.
