NEWCASTLE, OK – An ambulance crashed into a toll booth Friday morning and injured four people on the H. E. Bailey Turnpike in Jackson County, according to a story by KTEN and a report from KFOR.
The accident happened around 3 a.m. on the H. E. Bailey Turnpike, between Chickasha and Newcastle.
The driver of the ambulance, Purcell woman Dora Handcock, 53, is suspected to have fallen asleep at the wheel, according to a quote from an Oklahoma Highway Patrol representative.
The ambulance possibly struck a concrete barrier, then ran through the toll booth and flipped it onto its side.
The accident nearly “tore the ambulance in half,” according to the report.
A toll worker, Chickasha resident Shannon Garst, was inside the booth when the accident happened. Garst was sent to the hospital for treatment and later released.
Handcock and another paramedic, 33-year-old Lawton man Justin H. Guffey, and a patient riding inside the ambulance, 43-year-old Altus woman Dominga Gloria, were airlifted to the hospital.
Gloria remains in critical condition at the time of writing.
The official cause of the accident has not yet been determined, and the crash is still under investigation at this time.
