A fireworks accident seriously injured a man from Byars Sunday.

According to officials with the Byars Police Department, 53 year-old Russell Terill was injured when a firework hit him in the eye shortly after 10:00 p.m. Sunday. Byars Fire Department Chief Dwight McCullar said firefighters responded to the call and made Terrill comfortable until Stratford Emergency Medical Services could arrive.

According to Terrill’s wife Carol, he was holding a flashlight bending over a firework while his son lit it. “When my son lit the firework, it all went off at once, knocking my son backwards and hitting my husband in the eye,” she said.

A physician removed Terill’s left eye Monday morning. He was released from the hospital late Monday.
