Highway Defect Blamed for Pawnee Co. Auto Accident

A highway defect is being blamed for a car accident in Pawnee County Sunday afternoon.

According to officials with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, a portion of the Cimarron Turnpike buckled by the heat was the cause of a car accident that injured 36 year-old Enid-resident Chason Lewis. Police say Lewis was traveling west on U.S. Highway 412 when his 2008 Honda CBR hit a two-foot high ramp created by the buckled pavement. The vehicle went airborne for 150 feet and then skidded another 222 feet.

According to the accident report, Lewis was transported by medical helicopter to a Tulsa hospital for treatment. He is listed in stable condition with severe injuries.

An Oklahoma Turnpike Authority work crew is repairing the buckled portion of the roadway. The agency says it’s not unusual for concrete to buckle when it gets hot and stays hot, as the temperature causes concrete to expand.
