Multi-vehicle crash in Carter Co. involving box, semi truck sends 3 to hospital

CARTER COUNTY, OK – Three people were transported to Oklahoma hospitals following a multi-vehicle crash that involved a box truck and a semi-truck last Tuesday, Dec. 30.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol told KXIII that the incident began when a box truck driver saw a deer on Interstate 35 South and swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting it. The box truck left the road and crashed into a disabled Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck on the shoulder.

A Honda driver who was driving on the interstate saw what unfolded and pulled over to help the box truck and pickup truck occupants. Seconds later, a semi-truck driver, who seemed to be distracted while driving, crashed into the box truck and the Honda driver and passenger.

The Honda driver and their front-seat passenger were standing outside helping the box truck and pickup truck individuals when they were struck. The force of the collision caused the box truck to overturn again and it plowed into the parked Honda vehicle.

The Honda driver, the Honda front-seat passenger, the Chevrolet Silverado driver, the Chevrolet Silverado passenger, and the box truck driver were all injured.

A medical helicopter transported the Chevrolet Silverado passenger and the Honda driver to Medical City Denton for treatment of serious injuries. An ambulance was also called to the scene and transported the Honda front-seat passenger to Mercy Hospital Ardmore for treatment.

The Chevrolet Silverado driver and the box truck driver both sustained minor injuries and declined medical treatment at the scene.

The semi-truck driver and the two additional Honda passengers (who were inside the vehicle when it was struck) were spared from injuries.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation will be leading the investigation. At this time, officials have not said if the semi-truck driver will be facing charges.
