The Oklahoma Highway Patrol was founded on April 20, 1937, and this year it celebrates it’s 75th birthday.
One of the things that brought the Oklahoma Highway Patrol into the national spotlight was the arrest of the Oklahoma City bomber, Timothy McVeigh. An Oklahoma Highway Patrol officer was working in Oklahoma City when he noticed a vehicle without it’s proper tags traveling on the roadways. He pulled the vehicle over, and evidently caught the notorious bomber within 75 minutes of the bomb exploding.
Although the technology has changed throughout the years that the patrol has been in place, their main focus has been maintained. That focus is centered on traffic safety. Patrol officers are still trying to maintain order on roadways throughout the state of Oklahoma.
