Residential construction employers expected to follow new rules

Earlier this year, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration added new fall protection regulations for residential construction contractors to follow.

The regulations were already used in commercial construction projects, but with a rise in fall protection accidents in residential construction projects, officials decided to extend fall protection rules to residential projects using workers at heights of 6 feet or higher.  In 2010, OSHA cited more employers with fall protection violations than any other type of safety or health violation.

Approximately 29 percent of fatalities from falls in construction occur in residential projects and 35 percent of those falls are from roofs.

Fall protection regulations that residential contractors are now expected to follow to protect their employees and others from potential danger include safety net, guard rail, and personal fall arrest systems.
