KAY CO., OK –  A 19-year-old construction worker died Monday morning after a vehicle struck him and two co-workers along the interstate in southern Kay County.

According to WDTV 5, the incident happened just after 8 a.m. on the southbound side of I-35 near Tonkawa. This is about 90 miles north of Oklahoma City.

The initial investigation indicates that a 17-year-old male driver likely fell asleep at the wheel of his 2014 Dodge Avenger and struck three construction workers, who were working on a bridge embankment near the interstate.

One of the construction workers died at the scene, and the other two required hospitalization. Medics airlifted one of the three men to a hospital in Wichita.

Authorities identified the victim as Jacob Matuszczak.

Neither the driver of the Dodge, nor his three teen passengers sustained injuries in the accident.

The investigation is ongoing.
