TULSA, OK – An alleged impaired driver was responsible for causing a fatal crash in the South Peoria neighborhood in Tulsa on Monday.
Tulsa Police told Newson6 that the crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the area of East 61st Street and South Peoria Avenue. Police determined that the driver of a red GMC SUV was attempting to pass other vehicles in front of them at a high rate of speed.
The driver lost control of their SUV and crashed into a telephone pole, which resulted in some sparks on the electrical lines, pinning them and one other passenger inside the vehicle.
Fire crews extricated the pinned SUV driver and their passenger. That passenger died, while the SUV driver and a second passenger, who survived, were taken to a hospital.
The surviving occupant’s physical condition has not been made clear.
Police said the driver was initially struggling to breathe and exhibited signs of impairment, noting that alcohol was involved.
Police also dimly lit roads hindered the driver’s visibility, which was another contributing factor behind the crash.
All SUV occupants are in their 20s.
