BLACKWELL, OK – A 44-year-old man died Sunday, and another was critically hurt after a wrong-way crash along the interstate in Kay County.
According to Kay News Cow, the incident happened at 5:34 a.m. on the northbound side of I-35 near mile maker 221 in Blackwell, which is north of Blackwell Tonkawa Municipal Airport.
The investigation indicates that a southbound 2014 Toyota Tundra veered into the northbound lane of I-35 and crashed head-on with a 2021 Ford F-350. A 2022 Chevy Silverado then struck the side of the Ford, and then a 1997 Lincoln Town Car hit a cable barrier after leaving the road to avoid the crash.
The driver of the Toyota, identified as Byron Richmond, died at the scene of the accident.
Medics airlifted the unrestrained driver of the Ford, identified as 23-year-old Earl Hayden York, to the hospital with serious injuries.
The other two drivers were not hurt in the accident.
Police suspect that Richmond may have been intoxicated at the time of the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
