ARDMORE, OK – An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper is left in serious condition following a pursuit-turned-crash that happened in Ardmore on Monday.
According to KOCO, a suspect declined to pull over when stopped by Ardmore police. They drove dangerously with the intent of fleeing from them.
When efforts proved unsuccessful, police sought the help of trooper Hayden Darst, who set up a tactical vehicle intervention (TVI) to try to catch the suspect, accused of shoplifting.
In TVI, a law enforcement officer would rear-end the quarter panel of a suspect’s vehicle, which would prompt the suspect’s vehicle to spin sideways and end the pursuit. However, in pursuing the TVI, both vehicles became entangled and drifted off the road.
Darst hit a culvert and his cruiser overturned several times. He became entrapped inside his vehicle and required extrication. Ardmore police were able to help Darst escape before his vehicle caught on fire.
EMS crews took Darst and the suspect to a hospital. The suspect was later released from the hospital and booked into the Carter County Jail.
